Is í an aidhm atá againn i gColáiste Íosagáin ná timpeallacht chairdiúil, thaitneamhach, shábháilte a chruthú, timpeallacht ina léiríonn pobal iomlán na scoile meas ar a chéile agus ina mbeidh daoine in ann oibriú agus foghlaim ar a gcompord, saor ó mhaistíneacht. Déanaimid iarracht an aidhm sin a bhaint amach le comhoibriú ó thuismitheoirí, ó dhaltaí, ó mhúinteoirí agus ón mBord Bainistíochta faoi mar atá leagtha síos in aidhmeanna na scoile.

Tá feidhmiú éifeachtach, rathúil na scoile ag brath ar dhea-mhéin ar ord agus ar eagar. Chuige sin, tá cód iompair leagtha síos againn. Cabhraíonn an cód seo leis na daltaí caighdeán iompair na scoile a thuiscint agus a chomhlíonadh. Is é an cód iompair seo a shainíonn an caighdeán sin.

 

  1. Is scoil lánGhaelach í Coláiste Íosagáin. Caithfidh daltaí an Ghaeilge a labhairt i gcónaí ar scoil, ag teacht agus ag imeacht ón scoil agus ag ócáidí scoile. Tugann sé seo an deis do dhaltaí a mbród as an teanga a léiriú do phobal na scoile agus don phobal i gcoitinne.
  2. Bítear ag súil le daltaí a bheith aireach, dícheallach sna ranganna, a bheith cúirtéiseach, béasach leis na múinteoirí agus lena chéile laistigh agus lasmuigh den scoil.
  3. Ní ghlacfar le maistíneacht de chineál ar bith (féach Polasaí Frithmhaistíneachta) nó le haon iompar a chuireann isteach ar theagasc agus ar fhoghlaim sna ranganna nó ar shábháilteacht aon bhall den chomhluadar scoile.
  4. Tá sé riachtanach do dhul chun cinn acadúil an dalta go mbeidh siad in am don scoil ar maidin agus in am dá ranganna i rith an lae. Tá tráthúlacht mhaith an-tábhachtach freisin mar oiliúint don saol.
  5. Ní mór do dhaltaí a bheith i láthair ar gach lá scoile. Má bhíonn dalta sa bhaile le cead tuismitheora, caithfear é sin a chur in iúl don scoil. Ní mór don scoil eolas a chur go dtí an Bord Náisiúnta Leasa Oideachais i gcás as láithreachtaí os cionn 20 lá in aon scoilbhliain.
  6. Caithfidh daltaí fanacht i dtimpeallacht na scoile i rith an lae agus níl cead acu an scoil a fhágail gan litir ó thuismitheoirí agus cead an Phríomhoide. Tugtar cead do dhaltaí i mbliain a 6 dul amach ag am lóin má bhíonn litir cheada acu ó thuismitheoir.Ba cheart iarracht a dhéanamh coinní a shocrú le dochtúirí, fiaclóirí &rl lasmuigh d’am / laethanta scoile.
  7. Ní mór do dhaltaí deá-iompar a chleachtadh ag fanacht ar bhusanna, ar bhusanna ag taisteal chun na scoile agus ag dul chuig cluichí nó imeachtaí scoile. Ar mhaithe le sábháilteacht, ní foláir do gach dalta an droichead coise a úsáid agus iad ag trasnú an phríomhbhóthair (N11) os comhair na scoile.
  8. Tá cosc iomlán ar chaitheamh tobac, ar úsáid alcóil, substaintí nó drugaí ar scoil, i dtimpeallacht na scoile, ag taisteal ar scoil nó ag ócáidí scoile nó nuair atá an éide scoile á caitheamh.
  9. Tá cead ag daltaí guthán póca a bheith acu ar scoil ach caithfidh an guthán póca a bheith múchta le linn uaireanta scoile – ní leor é a bheith ina thost. Níl cead úsáid a bhaint as gutháin phóca le linn uaireanta scoile le téacsteachtaireachtaí a sheoladh nó grianghrafanna a ghlacadh. (féach Polasaí maidir le Gutháin Phóca agus Gléasanna Ceoil)
  10. Tá cosc ar úsáid gléasanna ceoil pearsanta le linn uaireanta scoile. I gcás 9 agus 10 thuas, bainfear an gléas ceoil nó an guthán póca den dalta agus coimeádfar é go dtí deireadh an téarma. Níl aon fhreagracht ar an scoil i leith gléasanna a théann amú.
  11. I gcas tinnis, ní mór do dhalta dul go dtí an oifig agus é sin a chur in iúl d’údaráis na scoile. Is tríd an oifig a dhéantar teagmháil le tuismitheoir.
  12. Éide Scoile: Caithfidh na daltaí an éide scoile a chaitheamh ar scoil, ag teacht ar scoil agus ag dul abhaile ón scoil. Bróga leathair, dubh nó dúghorm, atá ceadaithe leis an éide scoile. Caithfidh an éide scoile a bheith glan, slachtmhar agus ainm an dalta marcáilte go soiléir ar gach ball éadaigh. Tá éide gleacaíochta ann do ranganna corpoideachais, do thraenáil spóirt agus do chluichí. Tá cead ag daltaí an chulaith spóirt a chaitheamh ag dul abhaile ó thraenáil spóirt a tharlaíonn i ndiaidh am scoile. Ba chóir go mbeadh stíl ghruaige néata, siar ón aghaidh ag gach dalta. Seodra simplí atá ceadaithe. Níl cead smideadh nó donnú bréige a chaitheamh leis an éide scoile.
  13. Déanaimid an-iarracht seomraí agus timpeallacht na scoile a choimeád glan agus taitneamhach do na daltaí. Chun é seo a bhaint amach, caithfear meas a léiriú ar threalamh agus ar throscán na scoile. Toisc an dochar a dhéanann sé do thimpeallacht agus do throscán na scoile, tá cosc iomlán ar ghuma coganta sa scoil. Aon dalta a dhéanann díobháil go mailíseach do throscán nó d’fhoirgneamh na scoile, cuirfear bille le haghaidh deisiúcháin chuig a thuismitheoirí.

Straitéisí le dea-iompar a chothú sa scoil

Tá ardchaighdeán iompair á éileamh ar dhaltaí leis an gcód seo agus tuigimid an tábhacht a bhaineann le hiarrachtaí na ndaltaí a dhearbhú agus iad ag déanamh a ndícheall an caighdeán sin a bhaint amach.

  • Leis an dea-iompar sin a chothú sa scoil, leagaimid béim ar leith ar an gcaidreamh idir daltaí agus múinteoirí agus go háirithe idir na múinteoirí ranga / bliainmhúinteoirí agus na daltaí faoina gcúram. (féach Polasaí Tréadchúraim)
  • Déanaimid iarracht atmaisféar dearfach a chothú sna ranganna trí dhul chun chinn na ndaltaí a mholadh agus iarrachtaí chun feabhais a dhearbhú. Déantar seo go neamhfhoirmeálta sa rang, trí mharc dearfach nó nóta a chur i ndialann scoile an dalta agus trí chóras luaíochtaí atá á fhorbairt sa scoil mar chuid den phleanáil scoile.
  • Tugtar moladh go rialta do dhaltaí as dea-iompar agus as cabhair bhreise a thabhairt os comhair na scoile ag na paidreacha ar maidin. Déantar iarracht speisialta daltaí a lua nach bhfaigheann moladh ar bhonn acadúil go minic.
  • Cothaítear atmaisféar dearfach, cairdiúil sa chumarsáid idir daltaí agus múinteoirí timpeall na scoile agus go háirithe ar choistí scoile agus ag imeachtaí eischuraclaim.
  • Déantar iarracht gach tacaíocht a chur ar fáil do dhaltaí a bhfuil fadhbanna pearsanta acu agus cuirtear sin san áireamh nuair a bhítear ag plé leo maidir le cúrsaí iompair. (féach Polasaí um Riachtanais Speisialta agus Treoirphlean na scoile)
  • Cuirtear eolas ar fáil ag cruinnithe foirne faoi dheacrachtaí nó faoi fhadhbanna a bhíonn ag daltaí ionas gur féidir le múinteoirí sin a chur san áireamh agus iad ag plé leo ar scoil.(féach Polasaí Tréadchúraim)
  • Cuirtear tuismitheoirí ar an eolas faoi Chód Iompair na scoile ag cruinnithe éagsúla agus spreagtar iad le dearcadh dearfach a bheith acu ina leith trí phlé a dhéanamh ar na bunphrionsabail atá taobh thiar de. Iarrtar orthu an chóip den Chód Iompair atá sa dialann scoile a léamh lena n-iníon gach bliain. Cinntítear go mbíonn ionadaithe ó na tuismitheoirí agus ó na daltaí bainteach le gach athbhreithniú ar an gCód.

Straitéisí le plé le sárú ar an gCód Iompair

Glacaimid leis go mbíonn ócáidí ann nuair nach n-éiríonn le dalta an caighdeán a leagtar síos sa Chód a bhaint amach agus go gcaithfidh straitéisí a bheith ann le plé le hiompar míchuí ar bhealach cothrom agus seasamhach. Chuige seo, tá smachtbhannaí agus céimeanna éagsúla leagtha síos againn le dul i ngleic le hiompar míchuí chomh luath agus a aithnítear é le hiarracht a dhéanamh an fhadhb a réiteach go pras.

  • Ceartú neamhfhoirmeálta Labhrann an múinteoir leis an dalta agus ceartaítear iad ag míniú dóibh an chúis nach bhfuil an cineáil seo iompair inghlactha.
  • Dialann Scoile Cuireann an múinteoir marc ar an tuairisc mheasúnaithe sa dialann scoile. Seiceálann an bliainmhúinteoir na tuairiscí seo sa dialann scoile go rialta.
  • Coinneáil Siar Muna dtagann feabhas ar an iompar nó má sháraítear an Cód go leanúnach tugtar bileog bhuí don dalta agus caithfidh an dalta coinneáil siar a dhéanamh tar éis scoile ar an Aoine 1.10 – 2.10 pm. Bíonn ar thuismitheoir an bhileog bhuí a shíniú agus faigheann an dalta ar a laghad 24 uair an chloig fógra.
  • Cártaí Iompair Más móreachtra atá i gceist nó i gcás labhairt i mBéarla coimeádtar cuntas ar an eachtra trí thuairisc ghairid a scríobh ar chárta iompair an dalta. Ar an gcaoi seo is féidir le múinteoir a fheiceáil má bhíonn pátrún ag teacht chun cinn maidir le gné éigin den iompar.
  • Coiste Comhairleach Má thagann sé chun cinn go bhfuil deacracht leanúnach ag dalta le gné éigin den Chód Iompair eagraíonn an bliainmhuinteoir cruinniú den Choiste Comhairleach. Ag an gcruinniú seo déantar iarracht teacht ag bunús na faidhbe agus comhairle a chur ar an dalta. De ghnáth beidh beirt nó triúr múinteoir ag an gcruinniú, ina measc an bliainmhúinteoir agus múinteoir eile a bhfuil eolas acu ar an bhfadhb. Is í an aidhm atá leis an gcruinniú seo ná iarracht a dhéanamh réiteach a fháil ar an deacracht. Lorgaítear tacaíocht ón gcomhairleoir scoile nó ó sheirbhísí tacaíochta eile nuair is gá. Tugtar tuairisc ar an gcruinniú seo don Phríomhoide agus coimeádann an bliainmhúinteoir cuntas scríofa ar an gcruinniú.
  • Cruinniú leis an bPríomhoide Is féidir leis an bPríomhoide cruinniú a eagrú leis na tuismitheoirí agus an dalta le hathbhreithniú a dhéanamh ar an gcás agus le hiarracht a dhéanamh teacht ar bhealach le feabhas a chur ar an iompar. Ní tharlaíonn sé seo de ghnáth ach nuair is fadhb leanúnach nó tromchúiseach atá i gceist. Coimeádtar cuntas scríofa ar an gcruinniú seo.
  • Fionraí Inmheánach Is féidir leis an bPríomhoide dalta a chur ar fionraí inmheánach sa scoil. Cuirtear tuismitheoirí ar an eolas más féidir teacht orthu in am agus coimeádtar cuntas ar an bhfionraí ar chárta iompair an dalta.
  • Fionraí I gcásanna tromchúiseacha nuair nár oibrigh na smachtbhannaí eile is féidir leis an bPríomhoide dalta a chur ar fionraí ar feadh suas le trí lá. Cuirtear seo in iúl do thuismitheoirí roimh ré agus cuirtear in iúl don Bhord Bainistíochta é ag an gcéad chruinniú eile. Coimeádtar cuntas scríofa ar an bhfionraí.Tá cead ag tuismitheoirí cur isteach ar achomharc faoi Alt 29 den Acht Oideachais má théann líon na laethanta fionraí thar 20 lá in aon scoilbhliain.
  • Bord Bainistíochta Mura dtagann feabhas ar an iompar míchuí agus má mhothaíonn an Príomhoide go bhfuil an cás tromchúiseach go leor is féidir iarradh ar an dalta agus tuismitheoir teacht os comhair an Bhoird Bhainistíochta le todhchaí an dalta sa scoil a phlé. Tabharfar fógra i scríbhinn don tuismitheoir faoin gcruinniú.

Rinneadh an t-athbhreithniú seo ar an bPolasaí Iompair de réir na dTreoirlínte a d’eisigh an Bord Náisiúnta Leasa Oideachais sa bhliain 2008 agus mar thionscnamh meánbhainistíochta faoin scéim LDS le linn na scoilbhliana 2008 – 2009. Tugadh cuireadh d’ionadaithe ó Chomhairle na nDaltaí a dtuairimí a chuir in iúl mar aon le hionadaithe ó Choiste na dTuismitheoirí.

Code of Behaviour

Our aim in Coláiste Íosagáin is to create a safe, friendly, secure and pleasant environment in which all members of the school community show respect for each other and in which people can work and learn free from bullying. We try to create this environment through co-operation between parents, pupils, teachers and the Board of Management in accordance with the aims of the school.

We recognise that there is an intrinsic connection between the school’s Code of Behaviour and other policies and that it must be read in the context of those policies. The following are the policies which are closely related to the Code of Behaviour;

The effective running of the school depends on good will, good organisation and structure. In order to achieve that, a Code of Behaviour has been set down. This Code helps pupils to understand and achieve the standard of behaviour required.

  1. This is an all Irish school. Pupils are required to speak Irish at all times at school, on their way to and from school and on all school occasions. This gives the pupils the opportunity to show their pride in the language to the school community and to the community in general.
  2. Pupils are expected to be diligent and attentive in class, to be courteous and polite to their teachers and to one another, both at school and outside.
  3. Bullying of any kind will not be accepted (see Anti-Bullying Policy) or any behaviour which interferes with teaching and learning in classes or the safety of any member of the school community.
  4. It is essential for academic progress that pupils are in time for school in the morning and for classes during the day. Good punctuality is an important part of training for life.
  5. Pupils must attend school every day. If they are absent with a parent’s permission the school must be notified. The school is obliged to notify the Education and Welfare Board of absences in excess of 20 school days (see Attendance Policy).
  6. Pupils must remain on the school grounds throughout the school day and may not leave the school without a letter from a parent / guardian and the permission of the Principal. Pupils in sixth year are permitted to go out at lunch time if they have a letter of permission from their parents. Every attempt should be made to arrange appointments with the doctor, dentist etc. outside of school hours or school day.
  7. We expect a high standard of behaviour from pupils while waiting for and travelling on buses to and from school and to matches and school events. In the interests of safety, all pupils must use the footbridge when crossing the N11 dual carriageway in front of the school.
  8. Smoking, the consumption of alcohol and the use of substances or drugs is forbidden on school grounds, when travelling to or from school, at any school activities or when the school uniform is being worn.
  9. Pupils may have a mobile phone with them at school but the phone must be switched off during school hours – it is not sufficient for it to be on silent. Mobile phones may not be used during school hours to send text messages or to take photographs (see Policy on Mobile Phones and Personal Music Devices)
  10. The use of personal music devices (ipods etc) is forbidden during school hours. In the case of 9 and 10 above, the phone or device being used during school hours will be confiscated and kept until the end of the term. The school takes no responsibility for the loss of any such devices on school property.
  11. If a pupil should feel ill during the school day she must go to the office and inform the school authorities. Contact with parents /guardians will be made through the office.
  12. School Uniform: Pupils must wear the uniform at school and travelling to and from school. Shoes must be black or navy leather. The uniform should be clean, tidy and have the pupil’s name marked clearly on each item. There is a P.E uniform to be worn at P.E. classes, training and matches. Pupils may wear the P.E. uniform going home from after school training. Hair should be neat and kept back from the face. Only very simple jewellery is permitted. Neither make-up nor fake tan may be worn with the school uniform.
  13. A great effort is made to keep the classrooms and the school environment clean and pleasant for the pupils. In order to achieve this, all pupils must show respect for school equipment and furniture. Chewing gum is forbidden in the school on account of the damage it does to school property. Any pupil who deliberately or carelessly damages school property will be expected to pay for repairs.

Strategies for encouraging good behaviour in school

This Code of Behaviour demands a high standard of behaviour from pupils and the school appreciates the importance of affirming pupils in their efforts to reach that standard.
In order to affirm good behaviour, the school places particular emphasis on the relationship between teachers and pupils and especially between class teachers / year heads and the pupils under their care (see Pastoral Care Policy).
Every effort is made to encourage a positive atmosphere in classes through praising pupils’ progress and affirming their efforts to improve. This is done informally in class and through a positive comment in the pupil’s school diary. The school is developing a merit system at present as part of the school planning programme.
Pupils are regularly praised for good behaviour and for extra help given at school assembly in the morning. A particular effort is made to mention pupils who would not be particularly academic.
A friendly and positive environment is encouraged in the communication between teachers and pupils around the school and especially on school committees and at extracurricular events.
Every effort is made to support pupils who have personal problems and these problems are taken into consideration when dealing with breaches of the Code of Behaviour which may arise (see Special Needs Policy and School Guidance Plan).
Information is provided at staff meetings about difficulties or problems pupils have to ensure that teachers can take that into consideration when dealing with them (see Pastoral Care Policy).
Parents are informed about the Code of Behaviour at various meetings and are encouraged to adopt a positive and supportive attitude to it by explaining to them the basic principles on which it is based. They are asked to read through the Code in the school diary with their daughter every year. Parent representatives and pupil representatives are invited to participate in each review of the Code of Behaviour.

Strategies for dealing with breaches of the Code of Behaviour

We accept that there will be occasions when pupils do not succeed in achieving the standard of behaviour set down in the Code and that strategies must be in place to deal with inappropriate behaviour in a fair and consistent manner. For this reason certain procedures and sanctions are set down for dealing with the inappropriate behaviour as soon as it is recognised in an attempt to solve the problem promptly.
 

  • Informal Correction The teacher speaks to the pupil and corrects her, explaining the reason why such behaviour is not acceptable. School Diary The teacher writes a comment in the school diary in the report section (blue pages). This section is checked by the year head on a regular basis.
  • Detention If behaviour does not improve or if the Code is breached regularly, the pupil is given a ‘bileog bhuí’ and must attend for after school detention on a Friday from 13.10 – 14.10. A parental signature is required on the ‘bileog bhuí’ and the pupil is given at least 24 hours notice.
  • Behaviour Cards In the case of a more serious infringement of the Code or in all cases of English being spoken, a brief account of the incident is kept on the pupil’s behaviour card. In this way a year head or class teacher can see if a pattern of unacceptable behaviour is developing.
  • Advisory Committee If a continuous pattern of unacceptable behaviour develops the year head may organise a meeting of an Advisory Committee. At this meeting an attempt is made to get to the root of the problem and to advise the pupil on how to improve. Two or three teachers may attend the meeting, including the year head and the teacher with knowledge of the problem. The aim of this meeting is to try and resolve the issue. Support may be sought from the school counsellor or other support services where it is thought appropriate or necessary. A report of this meeting is given to the Principal and the year head keeps a written account of the meeting.
  • Meeting with the Principal The Principal may organise a meeting with the pupil and her parents / guardians to review the case and to seek to find ways of improving the behaviour of the pupil. This normally only occurs when the inappropriate behaviour is continuous or of a serious nature. A written account is kept of this meeting.
  • Internal Suspension The Principal may decide to place the pupil on internal suspension within the school. Parents are informed if they can be contacted in time and the internal suspension is recorded on the pupil’s behaviour card.
  • Suspension In cases of a serious breach of the Code and when other sanctions have been tried and have not worked, the Principal may suspend a pupil from the school for up to three days. Parents are informed beforehand and the Board of Management is informed at the next meeting. A written account of the suspension is kept. Parents can, under section 29 of the Education Act, appeal the suspension if the number of days suspended exceeds 20 in any one school year.
  • Board of Management If there is no improvement in the pupil’s inappropriate behaviour and if the Principal feels that the case is serious enough, the pupil and her parents / guardians may be asked to appear before the Board of Management to discuss the pupil’s future in the school. Parents / Guardians will be informed in writing beforehand as to the details of the meeting.


This review of the Code of Behaviour was undertaken in accordance with the Guidelines issued by the National Education and Welfare Board in 2008 and as part of a middle management project under the Leadership and Development in Schools during the school year 2008 / 2009. Representatives of Coiste na dTuismitheoirí and Comhairle na nDaltaí were involved in the review process.

This policy will be reviewed regularly.
